Bau: A transformation from an old Gold rush town

Bau Town, as i remember during my younger days is picnic at the 'Tasik Biru'. Bau has it interesting history as a gold producing town. The quarry is actually situated at the 'Tasik Biru' as the name 'tasik' in Malay means lake and 'Biru' in Malay mean blue. As the name suggested, the quarry now is flooded with water.

A few years back some private company have dried up the lake and try to quarry it gold. I guess it was not economically to quarry it thus now it is flooded with water. Nice and deep. How deep? just think of looking at a lorry at the bottom as big as 20 cm length.

Where is Bau? It is situated 45 minutes from Kuching City. It is the stronghold of the Bidayuh people. However, the community is consisted of Bidayuh, Chinese (Hakka mostly), Iban, Malay.

The modern part of the town.

Just in the town you will find some old shop house with it window as the pictures below.

The play ground next to the lake.

  1. The old shop houses and wooden planks look very "historical".
